This is me, your fairly non-threatening host for this part of the hunt. I’m Kady Cross, and I write a bunch of stuff — currently about ghosts. I have 4 cats, love the color pink, and have more makeup than anyone could ever possibly use. Still, I’m going to try. Somewhere on this page, I’ve hidden my favorite number. It will appear in TEAL. That’s the number you need to add up with all the others on Team TEAL in order to have a chance at winning. Also, somewhere on this hunt, I’ve hidden a playlist for SISTERS OF SALT AND IRON, my newest book (released today!)

A little history of the YA Scavenger Hunt – This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors…and a chance to win some awesome prizes! At this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author, you also get a clue for the hunt. Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize–one lucky winner will receive one book from each author on the hunt in my team! But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online for 72 hours!

Go to the YA Scavenger Hunt page to find out all about the hunt. There are eight tealcontests going on simultaneously, and you can enter one or all! I am a part of the TEAL TEAM–but there is also a red team, an orange team, a gold team, a green team, a teal team, a blue team, a purple team, and a pink team for a chance to win a whole different set of books! How incredibly awesome is that?

Directions: Below, you’ll notice that I’ve hidden my favorite number. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the TEAL team, and then add them up (don’t worry, you can use a calculator!).
Entry Form: Once you’ve added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.
Rules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by DATE, at noon Pacific Time. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

“I have a very visual imagination, and I’m very interested in graphic art, illustration, and comic books. For a while I wanted to make 13 Days of Midnight into a graphic novel, although I don’t think I’m really a good enough artist to draw professionally yet, so I wrote it out as a regular novel. Although I don’t think that what a character looks like is the most important thing about them, when designing an unusual group of characters like the ghosts Luke inherits, I wanted more of a handle on what they looked like, so I made a lot of drawings of them. These are the Judge and the Prisoner, two of the less pleasant ghosts that Luke meets. I always liked designing villains and I had a lot of fun with these two characters.”

Bio: Leo Hunt is a human being. The rumours that he is really a collection of ferrets hiding inside a coat are vicious slander. Please do not contact him with queries about the ferret rumour.

Leo is the author of the Dunbarrow books, a paranormal adventure series for young adult readers. The series has been described as ‘definitely a series of books’ by prominent critics. Leo’s mum really likes them too. The first novel in the series, 13 Days of Midnight, was nominated for the 2016 Branford Boase Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Award.
Synopsis: When Luke Manchett’s estranged father dies suddenly, he leaves his son a dark inheritance. Luke has been left in charge of his father’s ghost collection: eight restless spirits. They want revenge for their long enslavement, and in the absence of the father, they’re more than happy to take his son. It isn’t fair, but you try and reason with the vengeful dead.
Halloween, the night when the ghosts reach the height of their power, is fast approaching. With the help of school witchlet Elza Moss, and his cowardly dog Ham, Luke has just thirteen days to uncover the closely guarded secrets of black magic, and send the unquiet spirits to their eternal rest. The alternative doesn’t bear thinking about.
For more information, check out Leo‘s site, or go straight to Amazon!
And don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of books by me, Leo Hunt, and more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 13. Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the TEAL team and you’ll have all the secret code to enter for the grand prize!
Continue the Hunt with Wendy Higgins!

Welcome! I’m Kady Cross and you’ve just landed on my portion of 2015’s Fall YA Scavenger Hunt!

This is Logan.

Like me, Logan is the youngest of 4, is fluffy, a little neurotic, and loves hugs.

Unlike me, he is more than 40% gray, poops in a box, and hacks up hairballs.

Now for the fun part!

I’m hosting author Diana Renn!

Diana Renn is the author of the young adult mystery novels TOKYO HEISTLATITUDE ZERO and BLUE VOYAGE all published by Viking/Penguin. She is also the Fiction Editor at YARN (Young Adult Review Network), an award-winning online magazine featuring short-form writing for teens. Diana grew up in Seattle and now lives outside of Boston with her husband and son.

Kady: Isn’t interesting that Diana realized she wanted to be an author at 5 and I realized it at age 8? True fact. Add those together and you get *13*.

Here’s Diana’s #YASH Exclusive Content!

Zan is a politician’s daughter and an adrenaline junkie. Whether she’s rock climbing or shoplifting, she loves to live on the edge. But she gets more of a rush than she bargained for on a forced mother–daughter bonding trip to Turkey, where she finds herself in the crosshairs of an antiquities smuggling ring. These criminals believe that Zan can lead them to an ancient treasure that’s both priceless and cursed. Until she does so, she and her family are in grave danger. Zan’s quest to save the treasure—and the lives of people she cares about—leads her from the sparkling Mediterranean, to the bustle of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, to the eerie and crumbling caves of Cappadocia. But it seems that nowhere is safe, and there’s only so high she can climb before everything comes tumbling down.

If you’ve been on the scavenger hunt for at least a few blog stops by now, your eyes may need a little rest from all that reading! So for my exclusive bonus content, we’ll take a break and go to pictures! These are pictures I took myself on a trip to Turkey a few years ago. These images inspired many pivotal scenes in BLUE VOYAGE.

These are wooden gulet boats on a Blue Voyage. A Blue Voyage (also called a Blue Cruise) is a traditional way of seeing the Turkish Riviera by boat. You can rent a whole boat or, if you’re on a budget like we were, rent a room on a boat filled with complete strangers and take a multi-day cruise with them. What could possibly go wrong? (Lots! And thus an idea for a novel was born!)

I love baklava and all kinds of pastries, so I was delighted when this man pulled up to our gulet boat in a small motorboat, to sell these goodies on our Blue Voyage. This happens in my novel too (only I made the vendor younger and hotter). But what would happen if the pastry vendor had something else for sale? Something that shouldn’t be for sale? This question sparked a major plot point for me in BLUE VOYAGE.

I love the Blue Mosque in the heart of old Istanbul. We stayed in a hotel very close to it and heard the beautiful sound of the call to prayer five times a day, broadcast from speakers. In my book, Zan stays in her aunt’s small hotel also near the Blue Mosque and comes to love the sight and sound of it. Gazing at it from the rooftop garden of her aunt’s hotel, she is able to gain perspective and reflect on the personal changes that are happening within her.

As I mentioned, Zan stays (and then works) in her aunt’s small hotel while she is in Istanbul. Since she’s a rock climber, she loves heights, and takes every break she can up on the rooftop where she can gaze at the sea, or the Blue Mosque, or the adjoining rooftop garden of the cute guy next door. This is the rooftop garden of a hotel I actually stayed at, and it inspired many scenes for Zan.

This is the Cappadocia region of Turkey, which has significance for Zan’s family and where Zan ends up at one point. I love the landscape, which looks like soft serve ice cream! Other parts of the landscape are honeycombed with caves, both above and below ground. I can see why many people take a hot air balloon ride to see it all better. Zan does in the novel – but why she ends up on a hot air balloon (or dangling from one) isn’t exactly for leisurely sightseeing!

The Cappadocia region of Turkey is layered history. Different civilizations occupied its cave dwellings, tunneling entire cities underground for safety. Here’s me creeping through one. Zan and her friend later find themselves in a perilous situation in a cave city just like this! (I’m claustrophobic so I hurried through – but their journey isn’t so easy!)

I loved the bazaars of Turkey. This is a picture from a crowded hallway in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. I love the sense of possibility and intrigue around every corner. When I thought of Zan at the Grand Bazaar, I knew she had to do more than shop there. What better place for a clandestine meeting . . . and a plan gone horribly wrong?

Okay, so Blue Voyage sounds incredible cool! If these photos don’t make you want to read it, maybe a visit to Diana’s Blue Voyage page will!

Black Swan meets Pretty Little Liars in this soapy, drama-packed novel featuring diverse characters who will do anything to be the prima at their elite ballet school.

Gigi, Bette, and June, three top students at an exclusive Manhattan ballet school, have seen their fair share of drama. Free-spirited new girl Gigi just wants to dance—but the very act might kill her. Privileged New Yorker Bette’s desire to escape the shadow of her ballet star sister brings out a dangerous edge in her. And perfectionist June needs to land a lead role this year or her controlling mother will put an end to her dancing dreams forever. When every dancer is both friend and foe, the girls will sacrifice, manipulate, and backstab to be the best of the best.
